About the Exhibition
Cheongju Craft Biennale 2025 (Cheongju, Korea) and the Whitworth, The University of Manchester (Manchester, UK), in collaboration with the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy (New Delhi, India), present Hyundai Translocal Series: Entangled and Woven. First presented at the Cheongju Craft Biennale 2025 and at the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy in New Delhi, India, the exhibition has now arrived at the Whitworth in Manchester.
Hyundai Translocal Series: Entangled and Woven presents newly commissioned artworks by eight artists and collectives based in Korea and India – Boito, Yeonsoon Chang, Youngin Hong, Kaimurai, Somi Ko, PÉRO, Sumakshi Singh and Jounghye Yoo.
The exhibition examines historic and current exchanges in textile art between the three cities under the theme of ‘craft and community,’ catalyzing a dialogue that foregrounds textiles not only as aesthetic and utilitarian objects but also as carriers of knowledge, memory, power and resistance. By linking the heritage of Korean craft traditions, Indian artisanal cultures as well as British industrial and post-industrial contexts, Hyundai Translocal Series: Entangled and Woven invites audiences to understand textiles as a dynamic site of global cultural exchange. In its final chapter of this international exhibition journey from Cheongju and New Delhi to Manchester, new commissions unfold alongside historic textiles from the Whitworth’s collection, revealing connections between Manchester’s industrial heritage and living craft traditions.
About the Works
Boito (founded in 2022 by Richa Maheshwari) presents Asareeri that is part of ongoing Navagunjara series, based on a composite creature of nine different animals from Odishan mythology and two woven panels inspired by structural parallels between Korean Buddhist art and Indian traditions
Yeonsoon Chang (born in 1950) presents Worincheongang, addressing the common ground between acts of creativity and the practice of meditation, referencing the classic Korean Buddhist literature on the moon and its thousand reflections
Youngin Hong (born in 1972) presents Sacred Empires, newly produced in collaboration with Kala Raksha, a grassroots artisan collective in Kutch, India, along with Thi and Anjan (2021), imagining a redistribution of symbolic power across species while honoring the inventiveness of traditional handcraft and the economic independence of women artisans
Kaimurai (born in 1984) presents The answer to all my prayers is in the questions I never asked, inspired by the symbolic systems of shamanism and Buddhism, ritual acts, and the significance of the bell— a musical and ceremonial object
Somi Ko (born in 1977) presents three new works—One by One, People of One, Continuum, and People of One, Moment—exploring the themes of “existence” and its resulting “traces”
PÉRO (founded in 2009 by Aneeth Arora) presents Entangled Memories, Interwoven Stories. PÉRO continues its ongoing research and innovation based on traditional Indian textile crafts, having collaborated with more than a thousand artisans across diverse regions of India
Sumakshi Singh (born in 1980) presents Spanning the void, informed by the symbolic form of a bridge—a structure that connects two separate points. Singh’s membrane-like structures transverse between the solid and the ethereal and continue to operate as a transient site of encounter and relation
Jounghye Yoo (born in 1960) presents Gilded Veil_A Mysterious Curtain Lightly Draped in Gold, a series of gates inspired by the gate of the Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, India, by employing Indian Ajrakh block printing and Korean traditional silk and embroidery.
