Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen

Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen opens with a newly commissioned, site-specific work in the New Museum’s Bowery-facing elevators. P for Power: Up Down (2026) is a new work by Singapore-based artist Ho Tzu Nyen, whose work across film, video, performance, and multimedia installation explores the plurality of cultural identities across Southeast Asia. Ho’s new work at the New Museum is part of a larger “P for Power” series and will be presented in parallel with, P for Power: Double Life of P (2026), opening at the Ulsan Art Museum on October 22, 2026.

P for Power: Up Down (2026) transforms a familiar act of movement through the building into an interactive encounter with questions of power. When a visitor presses an elevator button, a life-size child protagonist appears on screen and delivers a short text in the form of a mantra, question, riddle, or note reflecting on the nature of power. Each interaction triggers an AI system that generates a unique sequence of images in real time, creating a work that continuously evolves through visitor participation. The work invites audiences to consider power not as a fixed concept, but as something constantly shaped through action, perception, and exchange.

Following the New York presentation, P for Power: Double Life of P (2026) will open at the Ulsan Art Museum on October 22. Configured as an immersive installation using 24 projectors and a multichannel sound system, P for Power: Double Life of P (2026) incorporates data drawn from Ulsan’s industries, technologies, materials, and soundscapes. Together, the mutable nature of the two works connects to Ho’s longstanding engagement with histories and identities that resist singular or fixed definition. Across New York and Ulsan, the exhibition explores the multiple meanings of power, from political and technological systems to more fluid notions of endurance, transformation, and agency.

Over the course of a three-year collaboration, the New Museum and the Ulsan Art Museum will explore the convergence of art and technology by engaging Ulsan and New York as distinct yet interconnected sites. Together, the two institutions will examine how shared values emerge across different local contexts and intersect with broader global currents. Hyundai Translocal Series: Ho Tzu Nyen, is one of three annual exhibitions the collaboration will produce, through 2028.
