About Hyundai Artlab
About Us
For over a decade, Hyundai Motor has deepened its partnerships with global museums and cultural organizations, including MMCA, Tate, LACMA, the Whitney Museum and the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In 2025, Hyundai Motor announced Hyundai Translocal Series, a new partnership initiative that roots itself in fostering dialogues and exchanges art institutions in Korea and across the globe. Hyundai Motor’s own art initiatives include Artlab Editorial, a digital platform dedicated to art writing by transnational voices and open call programs like the VH AWARD and the Hyundai Blue Prize+. Our ongoing collaborations and programs embrace the complexities of the cultural landscape by exploring new ideas and perspectives with individuals and organizations within and beyond the art ecosystem. The team steering these partnerships and initiatives is Hyundai Artlab. Our goal is to spark meaningful dialogue, cultivate empathy, and facilitate collaborations that connect across boundaries.
#Mission
We aspire to offer opportunities to reconsider the contemporary and envision the future by supporting art and its communities.
Hyundai Artlab catalyzes Hyundai Motor’s long-standing partnerships with museums and cultural organizations around the world. As an extension of this work, we endeavor to expand access to the arts while fostering enriched connections amongst our community of artists, researchers, technologists, curators, writers, and global audiences. With all that we do, our aim is to ignite conversation, cultivate empathy, and facilitate collaboration that transcends conventional boundaries. Our efforts extend beyond support for individual exhibitions or institutions; we strive to engage the entire art ecosystem by building resilient networks that function like parts of a living organism.
#Partners
Our dedication to the arts takes shape through long-term partnerships with museums and cultural organizations across the globe. In a collaborative spirit with each partner, we create unique initiatives aimed at fostering our shared passion to explore new ways for supporting art, artists, and art audiences worldwide. As a continuously evolving network, Artlab’s hybrid structure allows ideas and support to flow between regions and interests, fully embracing diversity and multiplicity.
MMCA, Seoul
In 2013, Hyundai Motor initiated its first long-term partnership, a ten-year commitment to National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), the nation's foremost cultural institution. Over the past decade, our collaboration has been dedicated to the expansion of Korea's contemporary art community, transcending borders to engage a global audience and facilitate access to the dynamism of contemporary Korean art. Our joint initiatives encompass the MMCA Hyundai Motor Series, an annual large-scale solo exhibition by esteemed Korean artists, and PROJECT HASHTAG, an interdisciplinary call-to-action for experimental collaboration amongst the next generation. Our partnership aspires to contribute significantly to the enrichment of Korea's artistic and cultural landscape, and expand its global reach.
Tate, London
In 2014, Hyundai Motor and Tate announced an unprecedented 11-year partnership, marking the most extensive collaboration in the museum’s history. Our commitment began with the support of the acquisition of nine works by the Korean artist Nam June Paik. In 2015, we launched the Hyundai Commission, an annual series of site-specific installations by international artists in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall whose interpretation of the space has revolutionized public perceptions of contemporary art. Our partnership expanded in 2019 with the Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational, a global research initiative focusing on global exchanges of artists and their ideas, with a vision to offer new perspectives on global art histories by highlighting exchanges beyond countries of origin. In 2025, Hyundai Motor and Tate announced the extension of their significant partnership, which encompasses support of both the Hyundai Commission and the Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational, until 2036. This partnership is built on a shared vision to offer new ways to experience art and support diverse perspectives from across the contemporary cultural landscape.
LACMA, Los Angeles
The experimental spirit of Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is reflected in its work with artists, technologists, and thought leaders, as well as in its partnerships, to share collections and programs, create pioneering initiatives, and engage new audiences. Founded in 1961, LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States. In 2015, Hyundai Motor partnered with the museum to further our shared commitment to the values of openness, flexibility, and creative thinking. Under the umbrella of The Hyundai Project at LACMA, this ten-year partnership—the longest and largest programmatic commitment in LACMA's history—encompasses acquisitions, exhibitions, and publications, with a focus on two important fields: Art + Technology and the Korean Art Scholarship Initiative. In 2026, Hyundai Motor and LACMA announced the extension of their longstanding partnership through 2037. The next phase introduces a new exhibition initiative under Hyundai Project and continued support for the Art + Technology Lab.
Korean Pavilion, Venice Biennale
Hyundai Motor continues to support the Korean Pavilion as the lead supporter for five consecutive exhibitions, including the 2015, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2024 Venice Biennale, reaffirming our ambition to connect more deeply with audiences from around the world and build on expanding exchanges. Founded in 1895, the Venice Biennale is one of the world’s most important international art exhibitions, taking place in national pavilions throughout the city and the Central Pavilion every two years. Since its inception in 1995, the Korean Pavilion continues to receive honorable mentions for presenting outstanding works by artists from Korea and broadening perspectives on Korean art across the global landscape.
Bloomberg, Online
For three years, beginning in 2015, Hyundai Motor partnered with Bloomberg to develop “Brilliant Ideas,” a series of videos profiling the most exciting artists working today, which aired on Bloomberg TV and online. In 2018, we extended our partnership—lasting through 2024—to produce “ART + TECHNOLOGY,” a video series exploring science and technology, and how breakthroughs impact contemporary art and everyday life, including robotics, the blockchain, and AI. Our partnership with Bloomberg creates opportunities for audiences worldwide to connect across boundaries by engaging with art and new ideas. Both series remain available to stream online, with all episodes of “ART + TECHNOLOGY” now viewable on our website.
Yuz Museum, Shanghai
In 2019, Hyundai Motor partnered with the Yuz Museum in Shanghai as part of the ongoing partnership between Hyundai Motor and LACMA, to further connect with global audiences in China. The partnership presented "In Production: Art and the Studio System" as its inaugural exhibition, featuring works by 24 contemporary artists and emphasized the overlapping histories of visual art and film.
Rhizome of the New Museum, New York
In 2021, Hyundai Motor and Rhizome partnered to support artists working with new and experimental forms. Established in 1996, Rhizome champions born-digital art and culture through commissions, exhibitions, scholarship, and digital preservation. Since 2003, Rhizome has been an affiliate in residence at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, working with the institution to explore the future of contemporary art and technology. To date, the partnership resulted in “World on a Wire,” a digital and physical exhibition exploring blurring lines between the virtual and the real. The group exhibition traveled to Hyundai Motorstudios in Beijing, Seoul, and Moscow, with unique institutional partnerships, including with the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, in Moscow. The project continues online as a generative web-based artwork by Yehwan Song—worldonawire.net.
Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
In 2024, Hyundai Motor and the Whitney Museum of American Art announced a 10-year partnership to enable the launch of the Hyundai Terrace Commission, an annual series of new site-specific works, in addition to support for the Whitney Biennial, the museum’s groundbreaking and signature presentation of the leading contemporary American art of our day. Since its inception in 1930, the Whitney has introduced emerging or relatively unknown artists to a larger audience and continues to be a powerful force in modern and contemporary art. Driven by a deep respect for artists and their vision, this new collaboration will expand a shared commitment to presenting the most relevant art and ideas of our time and opening up discussions for audiences worldwide. This is one of the museum’s longest and most expansive global corporate partnerships to date.

Nam June Paik Art Center & the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Yongin & São Paulo
“We are excited to be a part of the Hyundai Translocal Series deeply dedicated to art and to transnational dialogues between museums, creatives, and audiences. Our museums, located in cities on opposite sides of the world and united by the spirit of Nam June Paik, who envisioned encounters transcending time and space by combining technology and art, look forward to collaboratively celebrating Paik’s legacy.”
Namhee Park & Jochen Volz
Director of Nam June Paik Art Center & General Director of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo.
In 2025, the Hyundai Translocal Series facilitated the exchange between the Nam June Paik Art Center and the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, exploring the theme of “media and performance” through a forum and research trip in São Paulo and Yongin. Building on the exchanges, the two institutions will present co-curated exhibitions in November 2026, translating their collaborative inquiry into a collective experience.
The Nam June Paik Art Center, established in 2008, honors the contributions of “the father of video art” and celebrates Nam June Paik’s interdisciplinary artistic legacy. It also seeks to empower the next generation of creators who embody key tenets of his practice: innovation, heritage community, and harnessing technology to advance artistic achievement.
The Pinacoteca de São Paulo is the oldest publicly accessible museum in São Paulo founded in 1905. Renowned for its extensive collection of 19th-century Brazilian art, the institution has since expanded to include contemporary works by some of the most respected global artists, and hosting a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program including new media.

In 2026, the Hyundai Translocal Series brings together the Ulsan Art Museum (Korea) and the New Museum (United States), exploring the convergence of art and technology by engaging Ulsan and New York as distinct yet interconnected sites. Extending beyond our partner network, these programs provide essential resources for experimentation and collaboration.
