Hyundai Terrace Commission: Marina Zurkow: The River is a Circle shares the artist’s vision of time, ecology, and storytelling. The environmentally adaptive animation loops through six interwoven, real and imagined eras of the Hudson River and its surrounding cityscape, inviting a profound reflection on our world. In this new film, artist Marina Zurkow, along with Curator Christiane Paul, and Curatorial Assistant David Lisbon offers a behind-the-scenes look at the non-linear narrative of the area’s layered histories and how the installation meets site. Her goal is to create work that inspires viewers to “act with love towards their planet.”
Her vision comes to life with the help of key collaborators, including artist James Schmitz, who built a climate-informed algorithm to transform the animation with changing seasons and weather, and architect Blake Goble, who designed the nautical-inspired seating and tactile sculptures framing the work to invite a deeper sensory relationship with the river as witness, constant, and co-creator.

About the Program
The annual Hyundai Terrace Commission gives artists and curators a platform to present site-specific works on the museum’s fifth-floor terrace, as part of the Whitney’s 10-year partnership with Hyundai Motor. Artists are invited to create large-scale, experimental projects that enable them to test their aspirations, incubate their creativity, and respond to the space and the neighborhood. During the years of the Whitney Biennial (every two years), the fifth-floor terrace space will feature the commissioned work of an artist for the Hyundai Terrace Commission in conjunction with the larger Biennial exhibition.
