In 2015, Jonathon Keats received a grant to explore how wearable technology could enhance, diminish, or alter the identity of its wearer. The artist worked with Lab advisor John Suh and his team from Hyundai Motor to extend his ideas about wearables into the automotive realm. Titled “Roadable Synapse”, the project’s first iteration underwent more than two years of research and development before it was realized in the summer of 2017, when it was installed on a Hyundai IONIQ vehicle for presentation.


Keats began his research for the project by posing the question: “Will the future of transportation be driverless?” Keats eschewed the automotive industry’s fascination with the self-driving car, and instead went in the opposite direction. He followed a line of thought, suggesting that our identification with vehicles would only intensify over time, his rationale being that like with smartphones, we might come to see cars as a cognitive and emotional extension of ourselves. Like a piece of jewelry, they might become physically and mentally attached to us, resulting in a united human-machine hybrid.


“Roadable Synapse” originated from Keats’ earlier project “Superego Suits” which the artist proposed for his Art + Technology Lab engagement in 2015-2016. The superego suit concept emerged while he was working in a neuroscience lab at the École Polytechnique in France, where scientists were studying how we use interoception—the internal awareness of bodily functions like a heartbeat and breathing—to retain our sense of self. In a series of lab experiments, researchers also revealed that subjects' selfhood could be manipulated by tweaking their perceptions of their own vital signs. It was through this that Keats began to consider how wearables could become embedded in our lives in such a way as to fundamentally alter our sense of self.

About the Artist

Jonathon Keats (b. 1971, New York City, USA) is an artist, writer and experimental philosopher based in the United States and Europe. His conceptually-driven transdisciplinary projects explore all aspects of society, adapting methods from the sciences and the humanities. He has exhibited and lectured at dozens of institutions worldwide, from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to Stanford University to the Triennale di Milano, and from SXSW to CERN to UNESCO. He is the award-winning author of four books of nonfiction on subjects ranging from science and technology to art and design, as well as three book-length works of fiction.


A contributing editor to both Discover Magazine and Art & Antiques, he also authors a weekly online art and design column for Forbes. He has been an artist-in residence at the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, Stuttgart, UC Berkeley's Sagehen Creek Field Station, and the LACMA Art + Technology Lab, a Black Mountain College Legacy Fellow at the University of North Carolina-Asheville, an Imaginary Fellow at Arizona State University’s Center for Science and the Imagination, and a research fellow at the Nevada Museum of Art's Center for Art + Environment. He serves as co-director and principal philosopher for Earth Law Center’s Interspecies Technology Transfer Consortium, as founding director and curator of the Museum of Future History, and as a creative consultant to Hyundai. A monograph about his art, Thought Experiments, was recently published by Hirmer Verlag.

About the Program

LACMA Art + Technology Lab

The LACMA Art + Technology Lab supports experiments in design, creative entrepreneurship, adventures in art and industry, collaboration, and interdisciplinary dialogue. Inspired by LACMA’s seminal Art and Technology Program (1967–1971), which paired prominent artists such as Claes Oldenburg and Andy Warhol with the resources of major corporations, the program was revived in 2015 as part of The Hyundai Project at LACMA, our ten-year partnership with the museum. The Lab provides grants, in-kind support, and facilities at the museum to support the progress of artist projects that take purposeful risks, and to foster innovation and collaboration across disciplines.
