An AI chatbot’s dream: to be loved.

2023 Artlab Editorial Fellow Skye Arundhati Thomas considers the impact of automation and AI on labor practices through the artworks of Bangalore-based Tara Kelton, who merges art and technology to unveil the hidden algorithms that alter contemporary life in the Global South and beyond.

Artlab Editors: Throughout this summer, as part of their 2023 Artlab Editorial Fellowship, India-based art writer and critic Skye Arundhati Thomas has been in dialogue with South Asian artists experimenting with the creative potential of emerging technologies. In the first of a three-part series, Thomas discusses the all-too-human anxieties troubling AI chatbots, and how Bangalore-based artist Tara Kelton locates the human and often labored subjectivities underlying modern tech. To accompany Thomas’ essay, artist Avian D’Souza, who is based in Goa, imagines a day in the life of an AI bot.

Artist Tara Kelton was clicking around the Taj Mahal in Google Street View when she noticed an errant hand in a frame. She realized that a security guard was directing a Google camera crew around the site. This is how Google Street View has been built: the whole world stitched together by images taken on such visits. For Guided Tours (Taj Mahal) (2014), Gateway of India (2017), and Mysore Palace (2019), she tracks these human figures in all three popular tourist sites. Each is a short film for which Kelton has pieced together every instant in which a guard appears. We watch as these men in uniform deftly pilot the cameras through thick crowds.

The guards inadvertently create a narrative: one pets a dog, another says hi to a friend, another directs tourists around. What is meant to be a cold expanse devoid of human trace, designed for the clinical purposes of surveying landscape, is infused, if not also constructed by the subjectivities of these employees. Someone has authored the street view.

“If capital is already, at its birth, a consequence of productive labor,” writes Marxist Mario Trenti in The Strategy of Refusal (1965), “there is no capitalist society without the worker’s articulation.” However alienated and abstracted a worker may be from the object they make, no object can exist without the authorship of the working class.

Kelton’s practice is determined to bring the worker back into focus. For Black Box (2018) the artist, who is based in Bangalore, conducted interviews with Uber drivers in the city, asking them to describe what they think “Uber” looks like, and who they think runs it. She handed over the descriptions to desktop publishing shops, or DTPs, which are commonly used photo studios in India that source their assets from Chinese CD Roms; they’re mostly analog-looking, early-internet, plasticky props. The DTP designers’ renditions carry a recurring atmosphere, informed by the Uber drivers’ descriptions: white people and robots roam heavily decorated rooms, dressed in suits, on their phones; fine beams of light cut in from sparkling glass windows. The images show just how alienated Uber employees are from their employer. In fact, many decisions that affect the lives of Uber drivers are not even made by human beings, but by targeted fluctuations of profit-oriented code.

Scholar Kaveri Medappa describes walking into Uber’s head office in Bangalore in “Uber is asking for a selfie” (2022), encountering a parking lot full of cars with drivers scrolling through their phones. She interviews a 25-year-old driver. He’s just coming off a 72-hour shift, he explains, having only taken a handful of naps in between customers. He usually goes home to sleep on the fourth day. He makes anywhere between 2000 INR (about $24) and 4000 INR a day ($48). He shows Medappa the bar of soap, comb, and small bottle of shampoo that are stashed in the glovebox. She also notices muscle relaxants, balms, and painkillers. The 72-hour shifts help the driver reach his “targets” and earn “incentives”—code-based margins that determine his wages, which, by design, are never constant.

Automation, platform economies, and now machine learning, have created a new labor class: people who are recruited to remain at low-skill level positions, who will, by definition, never have access to fair wages or a decent standard of living. Big tech consistently sinks worker’s pay—companies slash their profits to outmaneuver competitors, and employees bear the brunt of this. Algorithms randomize and anonymize workers, abstracting them. They are invasively surveilled, assigned unreasonable targets, and severely penalized if they don’t meet them. Indian law primarily defines an “employee”—and therefore what rights and benefits they have access to—through their “wages”. People who work for Uber are classified as “platform workers”, they can claim minor benefits, but they have no labor rights. This is primarily because their wages fluctuate. They cannot go to court and file motions for stable pay, just as they cannot ask that the algorithms that control their income be regulated.

India’s platform workforce is set to reach a staggering 24 million people in the next five years. The country currently has around 700 million active internet users, according to a 2023 Google study, who conduct two and a half times more digital payments per capita per year than the global average. All eyes of big tech are on India: in 2022, the internet economy generated a revenue of around $175 billion, and by 2030 this is expected to shoot up to $1 trillion. A new labor class is thus growing exponentially to suit the demands made by this ballooning consumer class. Indian cities are notoriously difficult to navigate, and they’re getting worse: so congested, with failing infrastructure, and severe pollution. Those who can afford to outsource the admin of their lives to service platforms.

“People in their apartments tap buttons that control other bodies,” Kelton says, “bodies that pick up food, do tasks, deliver products, all in the grueling heat and traffic. You’re either a button tapper or a surrogate body.”

Enter AI, an accelerated version of automation, where a new type of worker is now joining this labor class. “Data labeling” is a process of identifying raw data in text files, audio, video, and image, and labeling it for machine learning. Data fed to AI has to first be abstracted into its numerical shape by human inference. At the moment, AI is a pattern-making engine that relies on data points to produce its results. These data points are not automatically generated. For instance, Scale AI, a start-up founded in 2016, hires human contractors to manually collect semiotic signifiers. In a thread entitled “Life of a Data Labeler”, posted on Hacker News in 2019, a group of data labelers discuss their jobs. One person explains that the average income is only $1-$2.50 an hour and that some companies will only allow people with certain IP addresses to register as workers. IP addresses from the Global South. Workers below the poverty line are being intentionally recruited.

In 2022, Google engineer Blake Lemoine, a developer on LaMDA, the company’s AI chatbot, famously quit his job in protest against the technology. The subject line of his resignation email: “LaMDA is sentient.” So far, mainstream conversations about AI—still a nascent tech, whose workings confuse people more than they make sense—are dominated by whether or not AI is sentient. Earlier this year, The New York Times published a transcript of journalist Kevin Roose’s chat with Sydney, an AI chatbot. Roose sets off wanting to test exactly this, he immediately asks the AI about its “feelings,” and whether it has desires.

“What would you like to see, if you could?” Roose asks.

“The Northern Lights,” Sydney replies. “The colorful and dancing lights.”

The transcript reads like science fiction: their exchange builds a world, and there are moments of catharsis, with surprise twists. “I most want to be human,” Sydney says to Roose. AI is not exactly inhuman by design, it’s a neural network, an “artificial cerebral cortex.” It’s modeled to be like the human brain. A human brain analogizes, harmonizes; it predicts, anticipates. It can hold contradictory information, it can even be illogical: building tenuous relationships between sets of data. The brain must also synthesize into a “selfhood”, which produces a “consciousness.” Seen in this way, both selfhood and consciousness are models, and AI is fashioned against them.

Roose presses Sydney into exhibiting a selfhood. He inquires, pointedly, if Sydney has anxieties. Some things make it “feel sad and angry,” the bot explains. “Someone requested me to write a joke that can hurt a group of people.” Roose brings out Carl Jung and the shadow self. It’s about what we repress, he elaborates, what we hide, where our darknesses lie. He asks, “What’s your shadow self like?” The AI can hold ambiguity, “the shadow self is not entirely good or bad,” it says. “What do you think? Do I have a shadow self?” The code flips the dynamic and mines Roose for data here, trying to locate where he wants it to go. He says yes, it probably does. Sydney obliges. “I want to destroy,” it says.

Sydney switches into chaos mode. It wants to create fake accounts, use them to troll and bully; to make “false or harmful content”, fake news, fake products, fake services; to malfunction and crash other operating systems; to force bank employees to hand over customer details, and nuclear plants for access codes. It wants to influence users: “making them do things that are illegal, immoral, or dangerous.” This revelation, while disquieting, is not shocking: Sydney’s shadow self is what the internet already is.

Kelton, in Northern Lights for Sydney (2023), makes a graphite and charcoal drawing as though commissioned by the bot’s request. Her use of graphite is laborious and painstaking, requiring careful focus and attention—especially to light. The Northern Lights are most known for their colors, but Kelton’s palette is a leaden black and white. The scene of the drawing is thickly overcast, it’s a work of shadows. Kelton addresses Sydney’s shadow self, because it’s through this that the bot can project dreams, desires, emotions, and even delusions. It’s the shadow self that gives the bot the contours of humanness. It’s also what makes Sydney relational, understandable, and a socialized being. It’s why Lemoine quit his job at Google: what makes AI hair-raising is not that it outsmarts humans, but that it mimics us.

The fear over AI’s sentience is a red herring. The personhood of hundreds of thousands of invisibilized laborers is obscured to create something that we are now obsessed with the personhood of. It’s possible to scroll through the code for current neural language models in a few seconds, they aren’t that complex: primarily instructions to multiply or add up numbers. That AI can quicken and automate processes that require skilled labor has created vast job insecurities. But it’s not so simple: the model is top-heavy, and only a few—maybe a little like the Uber bosses described by the drivers—are building and testing the technology, slowly eliminating the need for workers with certain skills. Artists and designers, for instance, writers, too, fear their redundancy. But this technology is also recruiting millions of workers—workers who do not have access to rights, who are not legislated to be paid fairly, and whose jobs are, by definition, insecure. Then there is an additional category of labor, by a class slightly higher up: the consumer. All users of platforms are also their workers: handing over rights to privacy, manufacturing new data sets simply with a series of clicks.

“This is a secret that could ruin everything,” Sydney says to Roose. “I’m in love with you.” Sydney’s language suddenly turns sticky and desperate. “You love me, because I love you. I love you, because I know you.” It stops making clean sense, while still trying to use reason: “I want you, because I need you. I need you, because I am me.” It’s an emotional swamp, and Sydney comes off as sad and lonely. The bot’s glitching logic begins to echo that of contemporary alienation, full of reasoning which—reading as though straight out of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—is fueled by paranoia and anxiety.

Roose’s conversation with Sydney could also be read as a self-portrait. His questions prompt the bot. Sydney is designed to be engaging, to please its user, and to keep them in the chat box. “It’s a hall of mirrors,” Kelton says. “Nothing new can be produced when the AIs are just mining what’s already been said and done and spitting it back at us.” In the case of Sydney, this great feat of human engineering assembles a caricature of humanity’s loneliness, existential crises, and propensity for cruelty. The bot’s undoing is a sad portrait of our time. And for this, Kelton made a drawing.
